In his portraits, the Dutch painter Ad Gerritsen (1940–2015) focused on the vulnerable and those on the fringes of society, from psychiatric patients to criminals – his vibrant palette strikingly at odds with the sense of unease communicated from subject to viewer. Well loved among artists, Gerritsen is less known among the general public; this large-scale survey is a welcome opportunity to confront his captivating and discomfiting paintings. Find out more about the Ad Gerritsen exhibition from the Gemeentemuseum’s website.
