A Black Odyssey

Romare Bearden’s (1911–1988) series of watercolours and collages responding to Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey is brought together for the first time outside New York City. The works, which constitute a lively and thoughtful update of the classical tale with reference to African American culture, were promptly scattered among private collectors after a short period on public display in 1977. They are displayed alongside related works by the artist, including an earlier set of drawings from the 1940s inspired by Homer’s Iliad.
