This display at the Fondation Beyeler (19 September–2 January 2022) presents portraits and self-portraits from a group of nine women painters, spanning from 1870 to the present day – from Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt to Marlene Dumas and Cindy Sherman. It considers the different ends to which each of these artists adapted the genre, using it as a lens through which to perceive the particularities of their society – whether Lotte Laserstein in Weimar Berlin, or Frida Kahlo in post-revolutionary Mexico – while also considering the broader shifts in figurative painting by women over the last 150 years. Find out more from the Beyeler’s website.
