While some museums remain shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apollo’s usual weekly pick of exhibitions will include shows at institutions that are now reopening as well as digital projects providing virtual access to art and culture.
The American artist Doug Aitken is the focus of this second instalment of the Carnegie Museum of Art’s online exhibition series, which launched in May to provide digital access to selected works from museum’s film collection. For migration (empire), first exhibited on the facade of the museum for the 55th Carnegie International in 2008, Aitken filmed a series of North American migratory animals in motel rooms across the US. As the animals engage with these artificial environments according to their natural instincts – an owl destroys a pillow; a deer raids the mini-fridge – the film explores what Aitken calls the ‘modern landscape’ of industrialised America.
