Couleurs! Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou

By Apollo, 4 July 2025

The Centre Pompidou is about to close for a five-year refurbishment, but that mean the end of its exhibition programme. Several museums in and around France are partnering with the Pompidou to mount exhibitions; one of these institutions is the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary and is putting on a display of colourful paintings from the Pompidou’s collection (8 July–31 August). It’s a playful show, arranging more than 100 paintings by the likes of Kandinsky, Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani and Sonia Delaunay – into seven sections according to colour. Each section will have its own soundscape and its own ‘olfactory atmosphere’, courtesy of perfumier Alexis Dadier. The curators are unafraid of sensory overload: as well as paintings, sounds and smells, objects designed by Jean Prouvé and Philippe Starck will be interspersed throughout this stimulating exhibition.
