Last year institutions around the world celebrated the centenary of Surrealism by putting on shows that explored the movement from a variety of angles. With the anniversary now in the rearview mirror, this exhibition at the Depot of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam looks at Surrealism as a sensibility that continues to find its way into contemporary art (15 November–6 April 2026). Six artists – Emma Talbot, Monster Chetwynd, Tai Shani, Laure Prouvost, Kerstin Brätsch and Raphaela Vogel – have selected Surrealist works from the museum’s collection and are presenting new or existing work to show alongside them, to highlight the ways in which Surrealism has informed their practice. Particularly pleasing is Prouvost’s tapestry We Will Keep Cool (Las Pozas) (2024), characterised by the artist’s visual wit: an upturned plunger sprouting sections of hose becomes a kind of fountain. It’s positioned just above a label bearing the artwork’s title, which reads as a statement of defiance – or is it denial?
