In March 2024, Xue Tan was named chief curator at the Haus Der Kunst in Munich, which remains at the pinnacle of contemporary art institutions around the world. Since taking up the role last summer, Tan has curated ‘Mega Please Draw Freely’ – a re-enactment of a famous performance work of 1956 by Gutai founder Jiro Yoshihara – and a solo exhibition by French artist Cyprien Gaillard, with whom Tan has worked closely on a new stereoscopic motion picture. Tan has always combined specialist knowledge of East Asian practice with a broader overview of global contemporary art; previously, at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong, whose exhibition programme she led from its founding in 2015, she curated exhibitions of artists including Francis Alÿs, Cao Fei and Tino Sehgal. Tan has also worked at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt and the Bard Center for Curatorial Studies in New York; in March this year, she was appointed co-curator of the 15th edition of the Shanghai Biennale.
