Having grown up surrounded by Kashmiri carpets, pichwai paintings and Chola bronze sculptures, Siddharth Somaiya had his eyes opened to the importance of collecting by his grandfather – with the emphasis not on the benefits for the collector, but for the artisans and craftspeople whose livelihood depends on consumers. He has now spent more than a decade finding ways to support artists in India. Somaiya co-founded IMMERSE, an initiative that helps artists and curators in Mumbai navigate the art world by funding studio and exhibition space, teaching skills such as exhibition design and assisting non-local artists with travel and accommodation, as well as organising exhibitions and ensuring the flow of all proceeds to the artists. His personal collection chiefly comprises early-career artists from the subcontinent, including Jayeeta Chatterjee and Thamshangpha Maku.
