Maybe: Ryan Gander

By Apollo, 6 November 2026

Ryan Gander (b. 1976) came to prominence in 2005 for the unsettling video work Is This Guilt in You Too (The Study of a Car in a Field), in which a camera zooms from above on to a car with its engine running in a snowy patch of land, conveying no sense of how it got there or why. In 2021 Gander was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts as a sculptor, and in-between he has made paintings, household objects, animatronic mice and more. His versatility and interest in making us think differently about how we interact with our everyday environment have led to him being called a conceptual artist – a label he has resisted. This is a milestone year for Gander: not only did he coordinate the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, but he is also the subject of a retrospective at Towner Eastbourne, which provides an excellent way in to his playful, provocative oeuvre (14 November–11 April 2027).
