Consciously or not, Amy Sillman is putting a novel spin on the concept of 3D printing with her site-specific exhibition at Dia Bridgehampton (28 June–). ‘Alternate Side’, in which the artist is covering the venue’s ground-floor gallery with printed and hand-painted designs, is a multi-media response to the question of how far printmaking can ‘serve as a model and method for a whole room’. Given how many allover paintings Sillman has made over the years, the open-ended nature of this commission is particularly apt; in her hands the gallery becomes a Gesamtkunstwerk. It’s a bright, colourful exhibition, inspired partly by the fluorescent light works by Dan Flavin on an upper floor of the building, and allows visitors to get acquainted not only with Sillman’s blend of figuration and abstraction but also her sense of curiosity and artistic restlessness.
