Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years

By Apollo, 18 July 2025

Even the most ardent admirers of Andy Goldsworthy will make discoveries in this exhibition of some 200 works by the sculptor, photographer and land artist (26 July–2 November). Here, the natural world is never far away: walls of clay, corridors of oak and arrays of leaves and twigs are either physically present or captured in photographic and video works. Goldsworthy has planned the show as a Gesamtkunstwerk responding to the architecture of the Royal Scottish Academy: it sprawls across the upper floors and most of the ground floor. It’s capacious enough to contain deliberate contradictions: nature can be dangerous as well as in danger, and our own relationship with the natural world is shown to be one of nurture, dependence and ruthless exploitation.
