A Farewell to Art: Chagall, Shakespeare and Prospero

Ben Uri Gallery, London

NOW CLOSED

This will be the first UK exhibition of a portfolio of 50 illustrations for Shakespeare’s The Tempest by Marc Chagall, which the artist drew at the age of 88. The illustrated edition of the play was published by Éditions André Saure in 1975 and Chagall’s original lithographs were printed on the presses of Fernand Mourlot in Paris. The exhibition makes the case that Chagall saw elements of his own life and experiences as a refugee and émigré in Shakespeare’s play. Find out more about the ‘A Farewell to Art’ exhibition from the Ben Uri Gallery’s website.
