This week’s competition prize is Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia, by John Guy et. al. (Metropolitan Museum of Art, £45)
From the fifth to the eighth century, a series of kingdoms emerged in Southeast Asia whose rulers embraced Hinduism and Buddhism, two major religions coming from India. Yet, until recently, little was known about these enigmatic early societies that continue to influence the culture of Southeast Asia today. Lost Kingdoms is the first publication to use sculpture as a lens through which to explore this formative period of Southeast Asian history. This beautifully illustrated catalogue is a groundbreaking scholarly contribution to the history of the early cultures of Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The book is both a watershed study and of Southeast Asia’s cultural legacy and a breathtaking introduction to a largely unknown tradition of early Hindu-Buddhist art. Lost Kingdoms accompanies the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
