At the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin is a portrait by Manet of a woman sitting at an easel and painting a floral still life. The woman, pictured in a long, flowing white dress with a beatific smile on her face, is Eva Gonzalès, the only pupil Manet ever formally took on. A contemporary of Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, Gonzalès was a respected artist in her lifetime and regularly exhibited at the Salon but died from an embolism at the age of 34. For this landmark show the Petit Palais has brought together some 100 paintings, pastels and prints (15 September–24 January 2027). These range from haunting early works such as La Psyché (c. 1869–70) and La Fenêtre (c. 1865–70), which carry signs of her Impressionist leanings, to Le Réveil and Miss et bébé (both 1877/78), which showed her breaking away from Manet’s influence to develop a distinctive handling of fabric and light.
