Farah Al Qasimi

Farah Al Qasimi makes full use of the architecture, designs, textiles and material culture of the Persian Gulf in her carefully staged photographs that express what it’s like to live in the region – especially for women. Several of her works complicate Western assumptions of family life in the Gulf: Living Room Vape (2016), for instance, features a patriarch with his head entirely obscured by a cloud of vape smoke. He is surrounded by porcelain objects featuring Islamic designs but is sitting underneath a painting of a European idyll, suggesting his eclectic tastes. Al Qasimi’s talents extend beyond the visual arts: she is a classically trained pianist and writes the soundtracks for her films, which include the 40-minute horror comedy Mother of Fire (2019), a playful blend of the supernatural and the satirical. Since 2023 her works have been on show as part of Tate Modern’s permanent collection; her works are also housed by the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Art Jameel in Dubai and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
