The exhibition of contemporary photography at the Hamburger Kunsthalle (20 May–28 August) features 20 artists who incorporate archival materials into their work in innovative ways. The show reflects on how the artists’ use of historical film footage, artworks from museum collections and newspaper clippings bring new meaning to their compositions. Highlights include Blame the Algorithm (2021), a collaborative work by the artists Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin which recontextualises archival newspaper clippings to provide a fresh perspective on how we interpret visual material, and pictures from the personal archive of American artist Sara Cwynar.
