Hong Gyu Shin has been described by the Art Newspaper as a ‘collecting prodigy’; he began acquiring works of note at the age of 13 and – still in his teens – developed a commitment to artists who have historically been overlooked. Shin Gallery in New York, now more than a decade old, combines dealing in blue-chip contemporary artists with presenting works from Shin’s own vast personal collection. Recent exhibitions have focused on Purvis Young, a self-taught artist of Bahamian descent brought to prominence by the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, and Georges Rouault, a little-known French artist born in 1871 who is associated with Fauvism and Expressionism. In 2020, Shin established Shin Haus, which invites three to five early-career artists each month to present their work at the gallery.
