Jessica Morgan has been named director of the Tate museums. She replaces Maria Balshaw, who announced her departure in December after nine years leading the Tate’s museums in London, Liverpool and St Ives. Morgan has been director of the Dia Art Foundation in New York since 2015, during which time she oversaw the expansion of Dia Chelsea, which reopened in 2021, and grew the foundation’s endowment from $40m to $140m. The Dia Art Foundation’s total revenue in 2025 was $41.9m (£31.4m). The Tate’s 2024/25 revenue was £167m. A specialist in post-war and contemporary art, Morgan was a curator at the Tate between 2002–15 and became curator of international art at Tate Modern in 2010, where she curated exhibitions including ‘The World Goes Pop’ in 2015 and a survey on John Baldessari in 2009. Ronald Rudd, chairman of the Tate, said in a statement that Morgan’s ‘visionary revitalisation of Dia Art Foundation, as well as her prior experience at Tate […] make her the ideal person to lead Tate into a new era’. Morgan added that she ‘[looked] forward to this pivotal next stage at Tate, and […] continuing and advancing the incredible work of Tate’s committed and talented team in the years to come’. She will begin her new role on 1 January 2027.
