Over the last decade the National Galleries of Scotland have done much to bring the painter Joan Eardley (1921–63) into the spotlight. An exhibition in 2017 made a case for her as one of the most talented Scottish landscape painters of the 20th century and another in 2022 demonstrated her feel for the land and weather of Catterline, the coastal village where she moved in her early thirties and spent the rest of her life. The latest exhibition puts 14 of Eardley’s paintings alongside works by Constable, Dubuffet and Tàpies and more (2 April–28 June). Monet’s Grainstacks: Snow Effect (1891), with its atmospheric abstract washes and soft grey light, is paired effectively with Summer Fields (1961), in which Eardley places blades of grass and wheat from farms in Catterline amid the paint. Also on display are Eardley’s sensitive paintings of children in Glasgow.
