The Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri received her doctoral thesis in intermedia art at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2010 for research into what she perceives as a specifically Middle Eastern aesthetic of sadness, which is expressed through poetry and music. Her work since has reflected on the social and cultural effects of oil in the 21st century and on subversive gender identities, and in 2017 she had her first live theatre performance at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels. Al Qadiri has had solo exhibitions in recent years at Gasworks, London, the Stroom Den Haag and Athr Gallery, Jeddah, and has participated in group shows including the Athens Biennale and the Asia Pacific Triennial.
