Niko Pirosmani

Niko Pirosmani died in obscurity in 1918, but has since become Georgia’s most celebrated painter. This exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Art in Humblebæk (4 May–20 August) marks the first presentation of the artist’s works in northern Europe, bringing together more than 50 of his simple but striking compositions on loan from the Georgian National Museum. Though little is known of Pirosmani’s own life, his art documented Georgian culture, wildlife and people in a distinct naive style. Highlights include portraits of working people such as The Fisherman (1908) and The Doctor on a Donkey (c. 1900s). The Banquet of Five Prices (1906) depicts figures toasting a feast – a subject that became something of a hallmark – with khachapuri, a type of Georgian bread, typically filled with cheese, pictured at the centre of the table.
