View of Delft (Postcards from Nowhere)
(2015), Vik Muniz
Muniz is an obsessive collector of vintage photographs and postcards, which he laboriously cuts, files, and collages to create bold new imagery on an epic scale. The Postcards from Nowhere series repurposes shards from both sides of used postcards to make new images of tourist destinations. The thickness of the collages, coupled with the studio lighting used to photograph them, lend these images a strong textural, tactile quality. This topographic view reimagines Vermeer’s View of Delft.
