Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers

By Apollo, 30 October 2026

The art of Rashid Johnson (b. 1977) is informed by literature, music, philosophy and science, and by his ability to impress and provoke viewers across a variety of media – including painting, prints, photography, sculpture, and audio and video installations . In this exhibition, which began at the Guggenheim in New York last year before travelling to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, some 70 works from across Johnson’s career are on display (7 November–25 April 2027). They include The New Negro Escapist Social and Athletic Club (2008–11), a series of black-and-white photographs of members of a fictional club of Black intellectuals; a number of Johnson’s distinctive relief paintings made using black soap and wax; and Antoine’s Organ (2016/26), a large-scale installation in which every so often musicians play a piano hidden among a sprawling mass of plants.
