Dominique de Menil, heiress to the Schlumberger oil fortune, was among the earliest champions of Cy Twombly, keenly collecting his paintings and sculptures with her husband John. In 1995, two years before Dominique died, the Menil Collection in Houston opened the Cy Twombly Gallery, designed by Renzo Piano and housing a rotating collection of Twombly’s work. Last year the Cy Twombly Foundation gifted the Menil Collection 121 works by Twombly, made using a range of materials including graphite and oil paint. This exhibition at the Menil Drawing Institute includes some 30 drawings from the donated collection, ranging from the 1950s to the ’80s (27 March–9 August). Among the works, which have never been on public view in the United States, are Narcissus (1975), a collage made of oil, charcoal and wax crayon on paper, and two lush, near-abstract landscapes from 1986.
