W.I.M.: The Art of Seeing

By Apollo, 25 July 2025

To mark Wim Wenders’s 80th birthday on 14 August, the Bundeskunsthalle is putting on an exhibition that honours not only his many contributions to cinema but also his creativity outside of the movies – namely his photographs, drawings, collages and ‘electronic paintings’, which comprise digitally retouched video images he made for his film Until the End of the World (1991). This exhibition feels more personal than most monographic shows dedicated to film directors: Wenders voices the audio guide, in German and in English (1 August–11 January 2026). Several of the film-maker’s recent documentaries have focused on artists, including Pina (2011), about the choreographer Pina Bausch, and Anselm (2023), about Anselm Kiefer; both were shot in 3D and, as if to capture this element of Wenders’s film-making, the curators have put together a ‘large immersive cinematographic installation’ to bring an extra dimension to Wenders’s remarkable imagery.
