In ‘The Analysis of Beauty’ (published 1753), the Georgian artist William Hogarth discussed the aesthetics of the ‘Serpentine line’. His observations relate directly to what is now referred to as the ‘sine-wave’, a mathematical curve that describes smooth oscillations. The contemporary group Disinformation has produced a sound installation at the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh, that responds directly to these aesthetic and auditory ideas.
