Ocean environments have nourished the imagination of visual artists across history and cultures, yielding a dramatic spectrum of influential works, aesthetics, and forms. ‘Imagining the Oceans’ includes coastal scenes by marine genre painters such as Willem van de Velde; romantic and symbolist fantasies by Charles Méryon; a woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi; items from the Pacific Islands region; and depictions of modern beach culture by Willem de Kooning and others.
