The Jacquemart-André turns to Italian mannerism in the latest of its thought-provoking exhibitions of the greatest Old Masters (11 September–24 January 2027). Tintoretto – described by Vasari as ‘the most formidable mind painting has ever known’ – is in the spotlight here and it’s no surprise that the focus is on the aspects of his work that inspired French painters in the 19th century: bold use of colour, dizzying angles and dramatic use of light and the prestezza technique of rapid brushstrokes. On display are major religious works such as The Miracle of St Augustine (1547–49), on loan from Vicenza, and The Trinity (c. 1561–62) from Turin, as well as mythological scenes and figures including Leda and the Swan and Danaë, autograph drawings and studies.
