Alexandre Estrela: Pockets of Silence

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid

NOW CLOSED

Alexandre Estrela (Lisbon, 1971) uses film and video as the core mediums in his artistic practice, which he defines as an approach to “formal and conceptual questions resulting from the intersection between images and subject matter”. With broad technical and historical knowledge of the mediums he employs, Estrela creates complex systems, making use of the characteristics of the equipment he works with: from the camera, video projector and screen to the perceptive reception of images. The visual effects, associations between sound and vision, the creation of synopses and titles that sometimes concur – or don’t – with the image, and the spatial transformation of the galleries displaying his works are all habitually recurrent strategies for deconstructing the conventional modes of perception and knowledge of objects and space.

The artist was the subject of a recent exhibition organised by the Serralves Museum in Porto in 2013, entitled Meio Concreto. On this occasion, he will produce an audiovisual piece for the Museo Reina Sofía, within the programme Fisuras.
